“If you’re not first, you’re last Ricky Bobby!”

Jesse Jones finishes 21st, last place in Trophy Truck at the SCORE Baja 500 with a time of 13:44:58. The truck went through three 3rd members during the 453 mile race. The crew was ready and waiting to quickly change the first one at Race Mile 80. When the truck burned up the second one at Race Mile 350, waiting for the replacement part took much longer. “When we stopped at Race Mile 80, we figured we would take it easy and just shoot for a top 12 finish,” explained Jesse Jones. “Losing the second third member didn’t make that possible, but we still were determined to finish the race.”

Jesse Jones 6th at Silver State 300

“Too bad it wasn’t the Silver State 250,” Jesse joked about his 6th place finish at the BITD Silver State 300. Jones battled with power steering issues the last 50 miles of the race, slowing down the pace for the #76 Trick Truck that won the BITD Parker 425 just two months earlier. Finishing just 7:27 behind the Trick Truck winner, and less than 20 seconds behind 5th place, this was a very close race.

Jesse Jones 2nd Overall at SCORE San Felipe 250

Jesse Jones takes 2nd Overall at SCORE San Felipe 250!

A painfully close race, Jesse finished only 44 seconds behind the race leader. The second place finish puts Jesse Jones in the lead for the SCORE season points.

Hoping for a repeat of his 2010 San Felipe victory, Jesse Jones and the Jones Motorsports team headed to San Felipe, Baja California in search of another win. Jones was able to claim the 2nd overall finish once again, but lost the first in class repeat by only 44 seconds.

The 252 mile race was full of ups and downs for the team. The Geiser built #1 Trophy Truck started 10th off the line and by mile 10 had overheating problems with the rear end. Charging past the 9 competitors that started before him, Jones was first on the road by Race mile 92. Jones hit a rock coming into the wash which subsequently got them stuck after changing the tire. 6 trucks passed by Jesse and his co-driver Joe as they got the truck unstuck. The short race left him with enough time to pass everyone who got around him in the wash, except for race winner Rob MacCachren. “The race started great despite our mechanical problems, but I made a mistake in the wash and it put us down for a really long time,” sighed Jones. “It was a really close race, I had some exciting battles out there.”

While Jones may be a little let down with his second 2nd place finish in the SCORE series this year, a second place finish at the San Felipe 250 puts the team in the overall points lead for the season. Jones is also currently leading the BITD points championship after a victorious 1st place win at the Parker 425 last month. The next race for the team is the BITD Silver State 300, on April 23rd. Jones returns to the SCORE series June 4th for the Baja 500 in Ensenada.

Jones Motorsports would like to thank BFGoodrich Tires, Fox Racing Shox, and Geiser Brothers Design & Development.

Mad Media Wednesdays: Jesse Jones is the King of Baja!

We kick off the first Mad Media Wednesday, with a feature on one of the most under rated off-road racers in desert racing, trophy truck champion Jesse Jones. He’s not flashy or loud, and he doesn’t have a big sponsor, but he’s been standing on the top of the podium more and more lately. After securing the 2010 SCORE Championship, Jesse gave a command performance in January and battled upstart Bryce Menzies at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, taking second place overall by less than a minute. Shortly after he clawed his way from seventh place to win the Best In The Desert Parker 425.  With the San Felipe 250 about to kick-off, I’m putting my money on another top three finish by Jesse.  Here’s a look into how Jesse has become one of the most consistent finishers in desert racing.
